Poems from a Stool · 2024

We're all just here for a cup of coffee…

Don't think of death before you sleep. Better yet, brother, don't think of it at all... Don't think of things that leave a lump in your throat… Inside it isn't May, and boredom's in the air. Don't try this turmoil on for size. Say goodbye to that short-sighted bitch Who failed to see a strong and mighty man Among the others, those who bark above their rank… Who hide their rusty souls behind a sour face… Who seek no pretext, happy with a cause. Don't think of death when you wake up, Celebrate life, stretching in the morning, With your sweet wife surrender to the Kama Sutra, And every day, like a brand-new spring, Will greet you in its arms good-naturedly, Accepting the child's unruly temper, Kind as a mother and honest to the end.. Feel it, and the south wind will blow. Never forget about death, It's the yardstick of being's stretch, Though sometimes it comes very abruptly, Without an invitation, without a call, without a knock. And you won't have time to let out a sound. As if a muzzle to the temple, a click, the crack of the bolt.. Whisky and cod at the wake, frescoes all around, And the priest's: "Son, rest in peace!" And then tears in chorus outside the tavern. Some from envy, others from parting: How can we live through this life's torment without you? Sorry, my dears, I haven't the faintest idea. I'll leave, come back, grow old all over again And everything will go round in a circle once more. Death's a relay — we pass it on to each other. And coming home from your wanderings to the house you love… Don't think of death before you sleep.
